So, How Did I Do It?
Full discretion, I did get this idea off of something I heard on the #AskGaryVee show. But that’s what the show is for. It’s like a couple of go getters yelling at each other after drinking a ton of Red Bull and pitching ideas about growth.
Some of you know that I moved my family to Fredericksburg and started splitting operations between Woodbridge and our new home. The thing about Fredericksburg is, it’s kind of a tight community, and I was the new guy with his hand out. So I had to figure out a way to meet local business owners on their terms and just do what I do best, converse and learn about people.
So I thought about it and realized that my biggest asset in Metro Nova Creative, is me. Time and time again, my customers say that they always enjoy sitting down and talking with me and how inclusive the atmosphere is. I began putting together some notes. Decided Facebook would be my best platform. Then I asked myself these questions.
- Who do I want to meet?
- Where do I want to meet them?
- How do I want to connect?
I wanted to meet small business owners located in Fredericksburg. I wanted to meet them downtown to show commitment to the local community. I wanted to connect with them at a local coffee shop to support a local small business.
Now I just had to figure out how to do that. And it was so simple, I can’t believe it took me this long to think of it. I recorded a video of myself on my phone inviting local business owners to sit down for a cup of coffee, on me. No strings attached, just two business owners getting to know each other over a free coffee. The first 5 people to tag their businesses in the comments will be the people I meet with. Of course, the idea is to talk about what Metro Nova Creative does, and hopefully pick up a few clients. But truly, it’s to grow my professional network in a casual way.
I shot the video, created a Facebook post on the Metro Nova Creative page and did two things that I think were really important; tag the coffee shop where we would meet, and tag “Fredericksburg Downtown” in the post. This helped spread the awareness of the post.
So how did it work out?
You can see from that screen grab that the numbers are surprising for such a small budget. That’s the thing, a lot of big business owners still think of Facebook as a waste of time, which is INSANE. The market value of Facebook ad space is crazy cheap still when you think about it. I actually ended up spending about $37 on an ad that put my message in front of over 4 THOUSAND targeted local people. There were legit interactions with comments and shares. The best part? I’m meeting with 5 business owners in Fredericksburg next week. All of which came to me on their own terms. And I haven’t even gotten to the people who are still commenting beyond the initial 5. The ad has stopped running, but the post is still getting interactions a full day later.
Check out the video and my weird face below!
Small business owners of Fredericksburg Downtown. Let me buy you a cup of coffee at 25 30 Espresso and let’s just get to know each other. Simple as that. Comment with the name of your business to claim your spot. First 5 businesses get a coffee on me. Looking forward to chatting!
