Self Care for Business Owners

Taking some me-time can seem impossible for the average person, but it can be increasingly daunting when you are a small business owner. It can start to feel like nothing will get done if you take a step back or delegate tasks, especially when you’re just starting out, but that’s just the time to take a moment for yourself. Take care of yourself to keep taking care of your business. Here are our top tips for ways to stay relaxed to increase performance and productivity.

1 Allow Yourself a Break

During business hours, it’s hard to take a moment of pause. When you’re not working on your to-do list, things keep popping up that need to be addressed before moving on to the next thing. The cycle can seem endless, and sometimes everything can seem urgent, but that isn’t always the case. Take time to evaluate your workload, and allow yourself small, frequent breaks throughout the day to give your mind a break. We’re not talking a 10-15 minute break every hour. Instead, find a way to step back, let go of your work for a moment, and then refocus. This can be as simple as pushing away from your desk, looking away from your computer, and moving on to the next task. Research shows that those who take breaks every 50 minutes or so are happier and more productive at work.

2 Spend Some Time Outside

This tip is a little harder to do during the workday, but it can make a huge difference no matter what time you have a chance to do it. Getting outside has tons of benefits, and you really don’t have to do much to reap them! Breathe some fresh air to clear the mind. Take in nature’s beauty to naturally relax your body. Soak up some sun to get some lovely vitamin D. All it takes is a few moments outside to help give your body a reset and be prepared to take on the next day.

3 Get Moving

If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a million times. Exercise releases endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. For those who are familiar with Legally Blonde, you know the rest of that saying. If you can commit to moving 30 minutes a day, you can reduce your stress levels and increase your happiness levels. This doesn’t necessarily mean hitting the gym for a weight training session during your lunch hour. You can walk around the block, take a dance class, get into rock climbing – whatever piques your interest and gets your blood flowing is perfect, and you’ll see the positive results in no time.

4 Delegate Tasks

Perhaps the hardest of them all – knowing when to ask help from others. As a business owner, you probably feel a certain level of, well, ownership when it comes to your business. A lot of people have a hard time letting go control and trusting others to commit and do a great job. Delegating tasks to your employees and hiring on experts to help in areas that you’re less familiar with can take a lot of the weight off your shoulders, allowing you to really focus on building your business, rather than maintaining your social media accounts or updating your site daily. Delegating tasks helps build great work relationships and gives others a sense of responsibility, so you can continue your upward growth.
