Metro Nova Creatives project manager Laura Honsinger started Olga’s Hats to carry on the giving and creative nature of her grandmother, Olga. Laura had this to say about the matriarch of her family: “Grandma Olga was a knitter. And a giver. Her skill with knitting needles and the swiftness with which she worked were unparalleled. One of her passion projects was making hats for homeless men, women, and children.”
Laura began the group right before the pandemic hit, meeting up with anyone interested to teach them to crochet or knit hats to donate to the cold weather shelter for our local unhoused neighbors of Fredericksburg. COVID-19 had other plans for the meetups but we’re getting back in action! The original idea was to donate a pair of socks with every hat but that grew into collecting all kinds of items needed for the community. Hygiene supplies, snacks, water bottles, clothes, care packages, and more!
For the final quarter of 2022, the MNC team has decided to host two drives to collect funds, food, hats, and other items needed by our community members. One is Olga’s Hats and the other is the Spotsy Snack Attack!
Donations can be dropped off at the Metro Nova Creative office Monday through Friday from 9am – 4pm.
