Explaining SEO

SEO for a New Website

The myths of Search Engine Optimization

In our industry, we hear the same thing (or some variation of the same thing) constantly. We consistently hear clients ask why their new website isn’t coming up on page 1 of Google when they search for it. The truth is it’s because if you opt out of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) during a new website build, then the likelihood of you ranking high on Google’s radar right away is extremely low. There are hundreds of sites published every day on the internet. Google can’t possibly discover every one of them. Imagine you’ve built a new home but skipped the part where you told the post office where it was and how to deliver mail there. Then you move in, and nothing ever comes in the mail. Would you be upset about it? No, of course not, you didn’t tell anyone how to get there! A website is kind of the same way. You’ve got to do the initial work to at least get that process started.

Now once you’ve built a new website and taken the time to perform some of the initial optimizations required to even be relevant, it’s important to understand that SEO and ranking high is absolutely NOT a light switch. There are a lot of companies out there selling the quick and cheap SEO option and it’s just a myth. A lot of times the practices aren’t exactly on Google’s “approved” list and could cost you dearly if discovered. For instance, we had a client tell us about their snake oil SEO plan that they were using. Turned out they were getting all their traffic push from an illegal gambling website somewhere in Cuba. Not a good call since Google looks down on things like that. It’s called trust-flow. Google likes to send its customers to websites that aren’t all full of possible virus links and spam. It’s important to understand that SEO is a strategy that should be budgeted for and left to a professional to make sure it’s done well and done to the newest standards of Google, which change frequently.
